Butterfly Update

Ok, Kallan, Reece, and I found the photo (left) of a monarch egg on the internet. Unfortunately, ours look as follows: Round: the egg we received on Saturday from Monarch Marie; Oblong: the eggs we identified on the milkweed from PA. The resolution on our $35 Eyeclops Bionicam is clearly inferior to the photographic equipment used to capture the confirmed egg, but the differences among the three are still striking. We thought maybe ours had already hatched, and we were looking at remaining egg cases lacking a developing caterpillar. But, according to internet sources, the emerging caterpillar eats the egg case in the process of hatching (see the video clip below) for immediate sustenance. So we have a mystery, what are these egg-like things? Does anything else lay eggs on milkweed? We will do some more research and continue to wait and see. In the meantime, we will scour our milkweed for other monarch egg candidates.
