The evidence is in. We scoured the remaining milkweed plants for new candidates and discovered 2 additional blobs that resemble the first one identified by Monarch Marie. Magnified 400 times and finally in reasonable focus, one of the blobs revealed the ctenophore-like striations evident in the expert's photo and the video clip. The kids recognize the similar patterning because they are quite familiar with comb jellies. We frequently catch them off the dock.
We are temporarily basking in this success, but anxious for the next phase. Our stems with the three host leaves are safely in a butterfly habitat awaiting emergence of the caterpillars. Keep your fingers crossed for us.
