These photos clearly show the silk button that suspends the final instart prior to and after the fifth shed; the cremaster or hornlike stalk attached to the button; the green pupa inside a clear chrysalis; and the gold "pearls," which give the chrysalis its name from the Greek word chrysos for gold. Our chrysalis should look basically the same for the first 1-8 days. Around day 9-11, the orange and black color of the wings should begin to be evident in the chrysalis. The color should deepen and grow more apparent as we progress through days 12-14, and the butterfly prepares to emerge.
