This surprise awaited our return from SERC: an amazing transformation from egg to beautiful mature butterfly. It is the dot or bulge on the bottom (below the branching section) of the 4th black line from the left that indicated the sex. It is a pheromone or scent gland. Males have one on each set of wings; females do not.
